Gymnastic Rings: Why They're the Best Kit in Calisthenics
If I could hand every upper-body patient one piece of equipment, it would be a ยฃ30 pair of gymnastic rings. My calisthenics colleagues call them the honesty machine: rings don't let you cheat a single degree of control. Here's why they work, how to set them up, and the exercises to learn in order.
What are gymnastic rings?
Gymnastic rings are two rings (wood, usually 28 or 32 mm) hanging from adjustable straps, borrowed from artistic gymnastics into calisthenics. Their entire magic is instability: a bar holds still, rings move in every direction, so every exercise silently includes a stabilisation workout for the shoulders. The same push-up or dip performed on rings recruits more โ which is why ring numbers are always lower than bar numbers, and why they build such robust shoulders.
Setup: two minutes, three rules
- Anchor: anything that would hold a swing holds rings โ a sturdy pull-up bar, a beam, a garage joist, a thick tree branch, or a frame at a calisthenics park. Same rule as bars: sharp tug test before every session.
- Height does everything: straps at hip height for rows and push-ups, above head height for support work and pull-ups. One pair of rings is ten pieces of equipment because the strap buckle is the difficulty dial.
- Width: roughly shoulder width. Wood beats plastic for grip, especially with sweat.
The first five ring exercises, in order
| # | Exercise | Standard before moving on |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Ring row โ body straight, pull chest to rings | 3 ร 10 at a challenging angle |
| 2 | Ring push-up โ rings low, turn rings slightly out at the top | 3 ร 8โ10 |
| 3 | Support hold โ arms locked on rings, rings turned slightly out | 3 ร 20โ30 s without shaking apart |
| 4 | Ring dip โ from support, only after the hold is calm | 3 ร 5โ8 |
| 5 | Ring pull-up โ false-grip work | Gateway to the ring muscle up |
Rows and push-ups slot straight into the full body routine as the horizontal pair; the support hold is the bridge to everything advanced, including ring front levers and the back lever.
The physio's view: why I prescribe rings
- Rings let joints choose their path. A bar dictates wrist and shoulder angles; rings rotate freely, so each rep travels the path your shoulder prefers. It's why patients whose wrists or shoulders grumble at bar dips often tolerate ring work surprisingly well โ and why I use rings in rehab.
- But instability is a load multiplier. The classic ring injury story in my clinic is a bar athlete assuming their numbers transfer. They don't โ start rings two difficulty levels below your bar level. Ten bar dips earns you support-hold practice, not ring dips.
- The support hold is the gatekeeper. A shaky support hold means the stabilisers aren't ready for dips, whatever the triceps say. Thirty calm seconds first โ this single rule would prevent most ring-related shoulder irritations I assess.
Misconceptions I hear
- "Rings are advanced equipment." Ring rows are one of the most beginner-friendly pulls that exists โ easier to scale than any bar exercise. The apparatus isn't advanced; some exercises on it are.
- "Rings replace the bar." Complements, not replacement: bars for strict number-building and weighted work, rings for control and shoulder robustness. My colleagues train both weekly.
- "Ring dips are just support holds with a bend." Not quite โ they sit near the end of the dip ladder, not the start. See the full dip progression from bench to ring to weighted dips for where ring work actually fits.
FAQ: gymnastic rings
Are gymnastic rings good for beginners?
For rows and incline push-ups, excellent โ among the most scalable exercises anywhere. For dips and muscle ups, they're a later chapter; the standards above set the pace.
Wood or plastic rings?
Wood, 28 mm for smaller hands or 32 mm FIG standard โ grip is noticeably better when sweating, and the ยฃ10 premium lasts a decade.
Can I hang rings from a doorway pull-up bar?
From a leverage-mounted doorway bar, only for low-ring work (rows, push-ups) โ full swinging support work belongs on bolted or free-standing anchors, as per the bar guide.
Why do rings shake so much?
Stabilisers learning their job โ the shaking is the training, and it calms within weeks. If it doesn't, the exercise is a level too high; lengthen the straps and step down.
